Synopsis – What to Expect from “44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-Out”
44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-Out is a 2003 action thriller that tells the true story of the 1997 North Hollywood bank robbery that left two police officers and two robbers dead.
The movie opens with a robbery at a North Hollywood bank. The two robbers, Larry Eugene Phillips, Jr. and Emil Mătăsăreanu, are heavily armed and wearing body armor. The police arrive on the scene and a gunfight ensues. The robbers are able to hold off the police for 44 minutes, but eventually the police are able to subdue them.
The movie then shifts to the two robbers’ backgrounds. Phillips is a former Marine and Mătăsăreanu is a Romanian immigrant. We learn that the two men had been planning the robbery for months, but were unaware of the amount of resistance they would face from the police.
The movie then follows the police officers who responded to the scene. We learn that the police were ill-equipped to deal with the heavily armed robbers and were forced to improvise. The movie also follows the media coverage of the shootout, which quickly became a national story.
The movie culminates with the shootout’s aftermath. We learn that Phillips and Mătăsăreanu were killed in the shootout, as were two police officers. The movie ends with the police and the public reflecting on the tragedy and the bravery
