Synopsis/Plot
12 Years a Slave is a 2013 British-American historical drama film based on the 1853 memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup. Directed by Steve McQueen, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, a free black man who is kidnapped in Washington, D.C. in 1841 and sold into slavery. He struggles to stay alive while being subjected to the cruelty of his owners and the inhumanity of the American slave system.
The film follows Solomon’s journey from being a free man to becoming a slave, and his subsequent efforts to regain his freedom. The story begins with Solomon, a free black man living in Saratoga, New York with his wife and children. He is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South, where he is renamed Platt and forced to work on a cotton plantation. Solomon is subjected to physical and psychological abuse, and his efforts to regain his freedom are repeatedly thwarted.
Throughout his ordeal, Solomon finds strength and resilience in his faith and the love of his family. He is aided by a Canadian abolitionist, who helps him get in touch with his family and eventually reunite with them. After 12 years in captivity, Solomon
