Apple already has its hands full with problems with the iPhone 4S and battery drain problems which their first patch did not fully fix and instead added to problems for those who did not have the problem before. Now comes reports of an iPhone 4 battery exploding on an airplane flightto add to the list of battery problems which they are experiencing. This battery explosion happened not once, but twice and adds to the battery issues in the news for Apple.

The first reported incident happened in Australia on Friday, November 25 as a plane was landing in Sydney and an iPhone 4 began smoking, filling the cabin as the plane landed. It was noticed that the phone was glowing red at the time and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is looking into the matter to make a determination as to what happened and ways to prevent it from happening again. Whether this is from the most recent iPhone 4 model from Apple or one that the owner has had for a period of time is unknown. But it appears that there was a battery mishap which caused it to overheat and caused the smoke and red glow from the heat. Was the iPhone plugged in for charging during the flight?

The second reported event happened in Brazil on Tuesday, November 22nd, being on two different continents. This one involved a newly purchased iPhone 4 and it was plugged in being charged when it exploded. This one is known to have not been in use at the time of the battery explosion. It also emitted smoke and a red glow to the phone more than likely from the heat being generated from the phone. This incident happened where the person was sleeping rather than the confines of an airplane which is a good thing. While the iPhone 4 was close to the persons head, they were able to wake up and move away from the phone and not get injured. This second incident comes from blogdoiPhone from Brazil and not official channels, though Apple should be taking note of this second incident as well.

With two incidents like this close together, Apple will need to investigate what is going on with the batteries which are obviously overheating and then exploding. The red glow is indicative of heat that is being generated in a confined space and resulting in an explosion to let the built up pressure out of the device. One would expect the iPhone models to have sensors in them to detect heat build up and then shut them down before there is an explosion as is being reported in these two situations.

We can hope that this is the last of the reports of iPhone 4 battery explosions, especially on planes. If not, this is going to end up being Apple’s next big product problem to deal with.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

The phone is not on fire – it’s the battery that’s on fire!

The article seems to be under the impression that it’s the phone consuming too much electricity that’s the fault:

    > One would expect the iPhone models to have sensors in them to detect heat build up
    > and then shut them down before there is an explosion as is being reported in these two
    > situations.

The problem is caused by the fact that the battery has a flaw and has developed an internal short circuit resulting in a thermal runaway in the battery.

It doesn’t matter whether the phone is off or on, if the battery has this flaw, it’s going to happen. It could be sitting new, in the box, on the shelf and it will happen (if the battery is in a charged state).
