Galaxy Nexus May Get Lotus Glass – Fortified Glass Still To Be Determined

Samsung Galaxy NexusThere seems to be confusion regarding Corning’s Lotus Glass being a replacement for Gorilla Glass and we received information from Joe Dunning over at Corning, that Lotus Glass is not a replacement for Gorilla Glass, but rather a complement to it. Gorilla Glass is designed to protect a variety mobile devices that we are familiar with along with others such as televisions. That protection from things like scratches is what most smart phones contain today. The new Lotus Glass is another layer below the surface on a mobile device which

will help manufacturers offer OLED display mobile devices with lower power consumption, superior picture quality and a thinner form factor.

That new layer could benefit the coming Galaxy Nexus with battery life and could be part of the report of great battery life from last week. If that report is valid, there are components contained in the phone which must account for the much improved battery life for an LTE phone.

Given that Lotus Glass is a separate layer on a touch screen, it could well be contained in the coming Galaxy Nexus to provide the superior displays that are being seen. Since we have not seen any confirmations about exactly what the Nexus will contain for the touch screen other than it will not have Gorilla Glass, there is the possibility of the new Lotus Glass as part of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. With the Lotus Glass in production, we can speculate about the possibility of it coming with the Nexus.

That still leaves us with trying to determine that if not Gorilla Glass, then what is going to be the “fortified glass” on the Galaxy Nexus? That is just one of the items to get clarified at the launch of the Samsung phone and one that could make a negative impact if it is not something that does an equal or better job than the recognized Gorilla Glass name.

That only leaves the DragonTrail Glass as the only named glass for protecting the surface of the Samsung phone. Other than that, it becomes a guessing game for what the Nexus will contain when it is released, hopefully this week. At that time, we will get an answer to the question of what the touch screen is made of.

The week is half over and we still do not have a Verizon scheduled event and the only other one is a Google event tomorrow. The Google event is an Android event and is probably a kick off for Ice Cream Sandwich. While it is possible it will be for Galaxy Nexus, Verizon is known for big shows at launches for something new, so this event is not it. If we do not hear from Verizon about a press event by tomorrow, that would mean that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will not be released until December.

So we still don’t know who makes the glass for the galaxy nexus’ display? I’m really curious. I have the GSM version and would definitely like to know who makes the glass.
